Ultrasound

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is the use of sound waves at a frequency above that of human hearing. This technology uses a transducer which gives off the sound waves, which are then reflected back from the tissue or organ of interest. These reflected waves are then used to create a real-time image viewed on a monitor. Ultrasound is most readily recognized for its roll in the evaluation of an unborn fetus. Ultrasound dates back to the 1950’s for the detection of gallstones though many innovations in the field have expanded the use throughout the body including cancer detection as well as for real-time guiding of procedures and biopsies.
